Boathouse XVIII: Emmanuel, Hughes Hall, Lucy Cavendish, Anglia Ruskin

Boathouse XVIII

A combination of photograph and painting to showcase the beauty of the Cambridge boathouses.

Boathouse XVIII accommodates the Emmanuel College, Hughes Hall, Lucy Cavendish and Anglia Ruskin Boat Clubs. There was an extension to the boathouse in 1936 and again in 1993. In this later refurbishment by Thurlow Carnell and Thornburrow, the two extended wings with balcony were added, almost tripling its width.

Sara made a beautiful photograph of the boathouse, catching a boat just being turned and an almost Mediterranean blue sky. Naomi relished the task of mixing just the right blue (which turned out to be cobalt, phthalo and French ultramarine) and of drawing the lovely detail of the timber balustrade.

This is one of a series of images of the wonderfully eclectic and iconic series of boathouses that are found along the River Cam.
